14 Best Marketing Podcasts

This article was originally written by Jamie Bell for Layout.

I’ve never, ever considered myself an auditory learner, so when podcasts first started popping up all around me in casual and professional conversations, I completely and totally ignored them. (Confession: I listened to the first season of Serial four years late.)

Then, sometime late last year while cooking up dinner, I threw on my first episode of the Bon Appétit Foodcast and never looked back. Next thing I knew, I was listening to podcasts in the car on the drive to work, on walks with my dog, and any time I had to do any kind of household chore.

Now, I listen to a ton of different shows for about 3-5 hours a week and have become one of those insufferable people that starts sentences with “I heard this on a podcast the other day.” People now ask me for podcast recommendations, including our very own content team, who managed to rope me into writing this article.

I’ve found podcasts particularly interesting for professional development and for hearing marketing stories “straight from the horse’s mouth,” so to speak, so I’ve put together a few of my favorites (and a couple of happy little extras) for you to check out!

Here are the 14 best marketing podcasts from my list of favorites!

The Best Digital Marketing Podcasts

The digital marketing industry moves so incredibly fast and has so many facets to it, so podcasts are another way that I’m able to keep up a pulse on success stories in brand, growth, content, lead gen, and sales enablement. Here are some of my favorites in this arena:

Inside Intercom

I’ll admit it: I have a total marketing crush on Intercom. Their podcast is just as great as everything else they create: impressive guests, pretty short format (usually less than 30 minutes), high-quality production. I have never listened to an episode of Inside Intercom without writing down at least three actionable insights and annoying people with them the next day. One of their recent ones with Meghan Keaney Anderson, VP of Marketing at Hubspot, became required listening for the marketing team and officially has become my second favorite podcast episode of all-time. (Keep reading to find out #1!)

SaaStr

I cannot even keep up with the volume of SaaStr podcasts; in fact, I’m not sure if I’m subscribed to one podcast or if they have seven different ones, but if so, they’re all fantastic. It also features my favorite podcast host—shoutout to Harry Stebbings—who does an absolutely phenomenal job with follow-up questions and really digging into the questions that I, myself, would want to ask. Really great, totally tried-and-true, and never disappointing!

The Growth Show

If you’re a fan of HubSpot’s content (and, quite frankly, aren’t we all?), you’ll love The Growth Show. They dig into a specific business success story and what that brand/company is doing super duper well or sort of disrupting in their particular industry. Some of the recent ones I’ve loved featured interviews with execs at Refinery29, Quip, ThirdLove, and Topo Designs, companies that all do really incredible things in the digital space and grow at really inspiring rates, so I always leave it with a nice takeaway and new way to look at my work.

B2B Growth

B2B Growth interviews a ton of people I’ve never heard of, but you can tell that they’re the ones really doing all the heavy lifting of marketing, sales, and problem-solving, which I so appreciate. It tends to be really practical and dials into a particular issue really well. There are almost a thousand existing episodes to choose from, so once you’ve started there’s never a shortage of content or worry that you’ve made it to the end, and there’s always something new to tune into.

The SaaS Revolution Show

This is my best recommendation if you’re looking for really SaaS-specific content, and I love that it gives a more global perspective; as WP Engine continues to grow, this is something that is always incredibly top-of-mind for me. The interviews are very thoughtful and the conversations touch on a variety of different areas in a SaaS company, including funding, hiring, and sales.

The Fizzle Show

The Fizzle Show is an absolute DELIGHT. They bring so much energy and happiness to their podcast, and it’ll literally put a smile on your face in the middle of the day. Whether you identify as a creative, marketer, or entrepreneur, they bring you actionable business advice and keep you really down-to-earth (no buzzwords or boring conversations here).

The Best Podcasts for Marketing Leaders

Although all of the above are amazing recommendations for any and all marketers (including those in leadership roles) to listen to, I do find it’s nice to dial into the specific challenges and lessons learned from VPs, CMOs, and CEOs. These all give you a deeper dive into topics and takeaways for other similarly-positioned employees, while simultaneously reminding me to keep an eye on the bigger picture.

B2B Revenue Leadership

This is another one that always sends me off into the world with a page full of notes and action items. They have tons of success stories on aligning sales, marketing, and customer success efforts, which hits so close to home to me (internal communication is forever and always one of my top priorities). I really, really enjoy it and it’s always a solid listen.

CMO Moves

I love to consume content a few “levels up,” so to speak, so I often tune into CMO Moves (which is an Adweek production) to get a sense for what the marketing leaders at some of the world’s biggest brands are doing. It tends to reference more of the “classic,” established brands and less in the startup world, but I enjoy that perspective: lots of guests from huge companies and organizations like Google, Forbes, Ikea, Walmart, and more.

The CMO Show

This is very similar to “CMO Moves,” but I find that it’s a bit more trend-driven and tends to lean into the brand side of the house a bit more. It’s a great one to queue up if you’re craving content marketing, social, creative advertising, etc. and does a fantastic job of reminding me to stay hyper-focused on our target audience.

HBR Ideacast

Harvard Business Review’s content is totally unmatched from a professional growth standpoint and has taught me countless lessons in how to be a better business leader and manager. Ideacast tends to be a bit all over the map from a business and industry standpoint, but I always find them interesting, and I like to get out of the startup/tech bubble every now and then. (I also love HBR’s other podcasts Women at Work and Dear HBR, so while you’re there, check those out, too.)

The Best Podcasts for Inspiration / My Random Must-Listens

While it’s great to stay up to date on industry trends and hear from marketing experts, sometimes the best inspiration comes from the most random of places. Plus, these recommendations don’t fit in any of the other categories, so here they are!

ShopTalk

This is, by all accounts, the best front-end development podcast out there. Dave Rupert and Chris Coyier consistently make technical topics fun, interesting, and accessible. Although I am not a front-end dev myself, I never feel like they’re talking down to the listener and I don’t feel like I need a degree in computer science to understand what they’re discussing. It’s fascinating to get a peek into their brilliant minds and it’s hugely helpful for my role here!

Revisionist History

I want to invite Malcolm Gladwell over for dinner, every night, for the rest of my life. His storytelling skills are completely unmatched and the mission of the show (to explore something lost, forgotten, or misunderstood) just hits me right in the feels and results in a completely captivating listen. My favorite podcast episode of all time is from the first season of this show, called “McDonald’s Broke My Heart.” Give it a listen! There’s a new season of Revisionist History coming June 20!

Bon Appétit Foodcast

I love eating food, thinking about food, talking about food, and now, even listening to other people talk about food. (This and The Splendid Table are both great, if you share my feelings.) Also, Bon Appétit is also one of my absolute top marketing crushes: their writing is phenomenal and perfectly suited to their target audience, their creative is completely awe-inspiring, and their social content is just totally spot-on.

Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend

I’ve just started tuning into this one based on a friend’s recommendation. It’s a little lengthy (great for road trips!), but I’ve enjoyed seeing (hearing?) a side of Conan I don’t normally get to see (hear?). The interviews are fantastic and pretty freeform; I found the one with Jimmy Kimmel to be particularly fascinating because they delve into the idea of the whole “late-night TV feud.” Happy with it so far!
