Developers, by nature, work in a very churn-and-burn industry. You know the feeling: A client comes around with a project and then you immediately hit the ground running to code it. By the time that one’s done, it’s on to the next website or doing maintenance on the last!
It’s no wonder that when you’re not solving web-based problems or staying up to date with the latest and greatest in the tech industry, it feels like there’s not much time left to focus on producing content for your own site. After all, you have a business to run! Right?
That’s where Krista Rae, a strategic WordPress developer, begs to differ.
Not only is she a master at WordPress, but also produces incredible content. Her secret? The content she produces helps her grow her business. So, we set out to find out how she does it!
First, it’s important to define what kind of content we’re talking about here. With Krista, for instance, she’s done it all: blog posts, in-depth articles, and most recently, a podcast (more on that later!). By drumming up exciting things on the internet, she’s positioned herself as a thought-leader in the online space that she occupies.
“If I didn’t have my content, I’d have no audience, which means no clients or product sales,” said Krista.
But to be clear, you can’t just post a single blog and think that your business is going to experience a consistent uptick, even if that blog manages to get eyes on it. “The most important thing for me has been staying consistent,” said Krista. “It’s easy to say, ‘Oh, I’ll just skip this week,’ but I know it’s important for me to keep it a habit so I don’t start getting lazy.”
By having a voice online, it causes the WordPress and development communities to direct questions toward her or look to her for help and advice. With some savvy “closing” skills, many of these inquiries turn into new business ventures.
By now, you’re probably thinking you’re “in” on this whole developing content thing, but…where do you start? First, make a routine, whatever that looks like for you. According to the content queen, “Having a set routine is the only way I’m able to pump out as much content as I do.”
With someone who produces as much content as her, you may be wondering what her all-time favorite piece she’s created is. It’s a workbook/ebook combination she made called Design Your Own Pixel Perfect Production, and it was created to help designers learn to design websites that get their clients results and then use those results to grow their own businesses. Awesome, right?
“I’d never created anything quite this in-depth before, but my audience absolutely loves it to this day.”
Clearly, Krista is a machine when it comes to developing WordPress sites, as well as genuine content for her audience. How does she manage it all?
“I’m a big user of the Pomodoro technique where you work for 25 minutes, take a 5-minute break, and then start again. When I’m sitting down for a day of coding, it’s good for me to get up and move around every 25 minutes as well as stay disciplined.”
Finally, one main thing you should consider when deciding to put more content into the world is what type of content works for you. If you don’t want to record YouTube videos, don’t. If you hate writing blog posts, skip it. On picking your passion, Krista says: “Do something that doesn’t feel like nails on a chalkboard when you’re trying to make yourself get started.”
Speaking of passion, her latest endeavor has been launching and running a podcast, which she calls, “such a fun part of my journey.” The idea to launch a podcast came to her in January of 2017 when her co-host, Kory, suggested starting one in the hopes of establishing themselves in their industries even more.
“We both consider designers our ‘ideal audience,’ so it was the perfect fit to create a podcast for designers who want to streamline and grow their business, ditch the code, and do more of what they love,” she said.
