What is a CDN? How do I set up a CDN with Flywheel?

Updated on September 15th, 2022

A CDN (Content Delivery Network) is a worldwide collection of servers that maintain copies of your site’s files, like javascripts, stylesheets, and images. When a user visits your site, they are served the files from the server closest to them, which results in quicker page loads.

If your site is on our Flywheel Cloud Platform, CDN is included and enabled by default. Woohoo!

Customers with sites hosted on our Legacy platform can add CDN for a fee by following the instructions below.

How to enable CDN for a site on Flywheel’s Legacy platform

  1. Navigate to the site’s Advanced tab.
  2. Under the Site Options heading, find CDN, hover over the Off button, and click Get CDN.
  3. Review the billing summary and agree to the overage terms.
  4. Click the Complete Payment button to begin the installation. You will be charged the prorated amount for the remainder of your current billing cycle, which will be yearly or monthly, depending on your subscription.

Because CDN on Flywheel’s Legacy platform requires a single primary domain from which to pull content, it often does not work well with multisite, especially with subdomain-style and domain-mapped multisites.
