Managed Plugin Updates: Plugin License FAQ

Updated on September 30th, 2021

If you have any premium plugins, we require that the current license for them is entered into the site admin. This must be in place in order for our team to perform updates. If the license is expired and won’t update, we’ll send you a summary letting you know it failed.

Flywheel doesn’t manage premium licenses; you are required to keep license keys updated in your WordPress admin dashboard.

WHAT IS A PREMIUM PLUGIN?

Premium plugins are paid plugins that developers host on their own sites instead of for free in the WordPress.org plugin repository. They require an active paid subscription in order to receive updates. When the subscription expires, newer versions become inaccessible. When this happens, we at Flywheel are unable to perform updates.

HOW DO I RENEW MY PREMIUM PLUGIN SUBSCRIPTIONS?

This depends on the plugin. Typically, you’ll want to log into the premium plugin customer portal and ensure your subscription is up to date. Once this is confirmed, you may need to enter a license key or update the product registration in the WordPress admin dashboard of your site.

WILL MY PREMIUM PLUGINS WORK WITHOUT A LICENSE?

You can continue to use the premium plugin or theme with its current features. However, the ability to receive support or update the plugin through the WordPress admin will no longer be available. Flywheel will not be able to update premium plugins when the license is missing or expired.

HOW TO RENEW A LICENSE IN THE WP-ADMIN DASHBOARD?

The best place to start is to check the plugin developer’s website for any documentation on how to renew or enter your license key.

Many premium plugins will have an area in the plugin’s settings in the WordPress admin to enter the license key. If the premium plugin is bundled with your site’s theme, you may need to interact with the theme’s settings or control panel.
