How do I download a backup of my site?

We create a backup of your site once a day, and store backups for 30 days. If you ever need to download a copy for any reason, just follow the easy instructions below!

1

Head to the Backups tab

Click into the site you want to get a backup of, then click the “Backups” tab to see a list of available backups for your site. Here you can download a backup, restore one, or create a new backup.

2

Click 'Download'

Hover over or touch the ellipsis icon to the right of the backup you’d like to download. You’ll see a dropdown menu with the option to download.

Hover over the backup gear icon and click download

3

Check your email

You should see a confirmation pop-up letting you know that we’ve got your backup on the way.

Confirmation of site backup

How long that takes will depend on the size of the site. A small site backup should usually arrive within a couple of minutes or so, but larger sites may take a while.

Backup confirmation email

Just click the ‘Download’ button in that email and your browser will begin downloading a .zip file containing your site’s backup files and folders. (Naturally, this may take some time for larger sites.)

Note

The backup will be sent to the email address listed in your Flywheel profile.

Note

Our backups don’t include the default WordPress files, only the wp-content folder, your database, and anything else unique to your site.

To use a backup to restore your site, all you have to do is replace an existing WordPress install’s wp-content folder and database with those from your backup. And if you have any questions, just let us know at [email protected]!
