Migrate a site from Flywheel to WP Engine

Updated on December 6th, 2024

WP Engine + Flywheel

When WP Engine announced its acquisition of Flywheel in June 2019, its vision was to offer the most relied upon and trusted platforms in WordPress®.1 This vision still holds true today and we aim to make it even easier to migrate between platforms! This guide will walk you through a few of our preferred methods for migrating to WP Engine.

Note

Looking to migrate to Flywheel? Here’s an
overview of migrations at Flywheel, including how to use the Flywheel Migrations plugin and more about the Flywheel migrations service.

Migrate from Flywheel to WP Engine

There are three preferred methods to migrate a site from Flywheel to WP Engine. Check them out below.

1. Check out the WP Engine Automated Migration plugin

This plugin was created in partnership with Blogvault to simplify the migration process to WP Engine and works for sites of many shapes and sizes. All you’ll need to do is enter some details about the WP Engine destination site and the plugin will take care of the rest by copying the site’s files and database over to WP Engine.

Get the WP Engine Site Migration plugin here.

2. Manually migrate the site

If you are unable to use the WP Engine Automated Migration plugin method or prefer to migrate your site manually, this is for you.

To use this method, you will need to obtain a backup of your Flywheel site via the Backups tab. From there, hover over or touch the ellipsis icon to the right of the backup you’d like to download. You’ll see a dropdown menu with the option to download!

Once you’ve got the backup handy, follow this guide to manual migrations at WP Engine.

3. Let Local take care of it

Local is a WordPress development tool with many neat features, including Local Connect, the ability to connect to both Flywheel and WP Engine (and did we mention, Local is free 😎).

Local Connect allows you to pull the Flywheel site you are trying to migrate into Local and sync that same site over to WP Engine in a matter of a few clicks. Just make sure you already have a site instance set up on WP Engine and you’re good to go!
