Flywheel does not support installing individual sites in subfolders on Flywheel. Each WordPress® installation on Flywheel lives at a specific domain.1
Shared hosts typically offer both hosting and domain name services in the same subscription, meaning a secondary WordPress site can be added and mapped to a subdomain from a cPanel. This “sub” site is usually placed within a subfolder of the main site’s directory structure.
As a managed host for WordPress, Flywheel works a little differently. Flywheel offers performance and security features on a per site basis, a “site” here corresponding to a unique WordPress install.
Since each site on Flywheel runs independently and isn’t sharing resources with other sites, we can ensure that it’s as fast and secure as possible.
Subdomains can be still be pointed to Flywheel from your domain registrar, but each subdomain is associated with its own site, since Flywheel does not support multiple sites within one WordPress install.
In the case of a Flywheel bulk plan, each subdomain would take up an additional slot on the plan. Or, if you have a single site subscription like one of our Tiny or Starter plans, you can add an additional site to your plan as a destination for the subdomain.
For example, maybe you want your marketing site and your shop to be on separate WordPress installs, but share a domain. By pointing myflysite.com to your marketing site and shop.myflysite.com to your shop site on Flywheel, you can achieve this very easily!
It’s easy! Once you have the secondary site set up on Flywheel, just follow our usual go live steps (keeping in mind that subdomains usually don’t require “www” versions of the domain to be set up as well).
You’ll want to ensure the subdomain you wish to use is added to the site’s Domain card and that you’ve pointed DNS for the subdomain to the site’s IP address.
