Fish markets, scenic views, and vegemite filled the last six days we spent in Sydney, Australia for WordCamp! After landing on Tuesday and dropping our things at the hotel, we made a beeline for Sydney Harbour, a stunning waterway that is home to the iconic Sydney Opera House. The sight did not disappoint!
The 15-hour time difference was not enough to keep us from waking early on Wednesday and catching the ferry to Manly, one of Sydney’s beachside suburbs. We topped off a day full of sightseeing with a visit to i-Creamy, an artisan gelato store known for it’s flower shaped gelato.
On Thursday afternoon, Campaign Monitor, a Sydney startup, graciously invited us to tour their office and chat over lunch. We quickly fell in love with their 360° office view of the Sydney skyline! Then after lunch, we visited Hudl, a local Omaha startup, at their Sydney branch. It was super cool to see a company that we have known for years while we were in another country!
After a couple days of touring, it was time for the WordCamp festivities to begin! Flywheel hosted a happy hour for WordCamp speakers on Friday, and later attended an impromptu meetup with our fellow WordCampers! Throughout the event, we made lots of new friends and were able to meet some current Flywheel users face to face for the first time.
Saturday marked day one of WordCamp, where Kat gave a talk on how to create a killer website for your business while utilizing free resources like themes, fonts, plugins, and analytics. It was also the debut of our brand-new booth, complete with a flashing LED sign made by our very own designer, Andrea!

Sunday was our final day in this beautiful country, so we decided to make the most of it. After leaving WordCamp, we visited the Taronga Zoo. We decided that the koalas were a unanimous favorite, and we all felt a little jealous of the giraffe’s view of the Sydney Opera House. It was a wonderful end to a fantastic trip, and we can’t wait for the next WordCamp!
