It’s where you house your belongings. It’s where you spend most of your day. It’s your little slice of home away from home. Yeah, we’re talking about your work desk! At Flywheel, each desk setup consists of a MacBook laptop and desk stand, a computer monitor, a wooden cubby, and a turquoise drawer. How, then, does each Flywheeler manage to make their square of real estate look so unique?

“What’s at your desk Wednesday” is our series about the quirky and unconventional things that can be found on  desks at Flywheel. This week’s star is our back-end developer, Andy von Dohren!

Tell us about your desk: My desk is filled with odd little knickknacks that represent my hobbies and interests.

I’m a huge Pixar fan, so last Christmas my wife got me a “Wall-E” Lego Ideas set. It was a blast to build and he now “holds up” my monitor. He also keeps Buzz Lightyear in line for me.

My love of Nintendo games goes all the way back to the original NES. I’ve spent countless hours rescuing the princess from an equally countless number of castles and Bowsers. Mini figures of Mario, Koopa Troopa (a personal favorite), and others line my desk.

Oh, and I can’t forget about my dog – Charlie. Flywheel is awesome and lets me bring my dog to work with me. He’s a 15-year-old black lab. He’s moving pretty slow these days and has some issues getting up the stairs, but he loves coming to work. He lays on his bed under my desk and sleeps all day. He’s the best.

Three words that describe your desk: Nerdy, Fun, Cluttered

What’s the weirdest thing at your desk? I love things that make you go ‘huh?’ and kinetic sand is just that. It’s just regular play sand, but coated in a polymer that makes it act like wet beach sand. You can mold and build with it. One of my favorite stress relievers is to take a ball of sand and squeeze it so it oozes through my fingers. Way better than a stress ball.
